Introduction to Mental Toughness
This course allows coaches and players to try the Mental Toughness programme and to start adding Mental Toughness to their programme. By answering some questions successfully you can use the Mental Toughness Introduction to qualify for the full Mental Toughness RPT Level 1 course. The Level 1 course comes with a full qualification from the globally recognised RPT (Register of Tennis Professionals) and will allow you to teach Mental Toughness as a licensed practitioner.
Course Description
A crucial part of Mental Toughness is preparation. The tennis match provides a very good example of how you need to manage yourself to perform at your best. Most of a tennis match consists of not playing tennis. As coaches and players we understandably put all our efforts into playing the point. So we look at technical and tactical aspects. In addition, we also go to the gym, eat the right food and hopefully, get enough sleep.
Dealing with the 82.5%
React to the point
Forget the previous point as you walk back to the fence and touch it
As you walk back to the baseline use positive body language
Take two steps into the court and begin to refocus
Decide what you want to do and how you will respond to your opponent's shot
(for example, I will hit the serve wide to the forehand and then hit cross court to his backhand)
See if they are pre-planning the point
See if there are any ‘dysfunctional narratives’ developing. (This is covered in the ‘Narratives’ unit of Mental Toughness)
Help them adapt and personalise their rituals
